In Geneva, voters have rejected several key proposals at the ballot box.
First, the Swiss People’s Party initiative to grant police officers functional immunity was thrown out by 67 percent. The plan would have protected officers from criminal investigations unless Parliament approved them.
Meanwhile, a housing initiative received strong support. Sixty percent voted in favour of more cooperative housing, with the goal of doubling the share of such homes to ten percent by 2030.
The Greens’ pedestrian initiative failed. It was rejected by 57 percent of voters. Instead, Parliament’s more modest counter-proposal was approved.
And finally, Geneva’s electorate overturned two so-called “corset laws” designed to restrict cantonal spending in times of deficit. Both were rejected by narrow majorities, confirming opposition campaigns led by the left.
