More rocks fall in Brienz

Geopraevert

More and more rocks are crashing down the mountain near the village of Brienz in canton Graubünden.

Residents were forced to leave a few weeks ago on worries a massive rockfall could destroy buildings.

While there hasn’t been one major fall – there are lots of smaller slides, which are now getting worse.

Geologists say they can’t be certain how much rock has come off the mountain - but the movements are increasing. Parts of the mountain is coming down at a rate of five meters a day.

Local farmers were allowed to re-enter their fields on Tuesday – but they were soon called back as more rocks crashed to the ground.

Experts say it’s still uncertain when locals can go home again.
