More kids in school next week

Geneva schools return next week – and the new minister in charge says she wants to breathe new life into the canton’s schools.

Anne Hiltpold is from the Liberal Party. Her predecessor Anne Emery-Torracinta was from the Socialist Party and in the role for a decade.

Hiltpold says she will take a more hands off approach and will focus on creating a climate of trust.

The canton will have to deal with 82,000 children – that’s 2,000 more than last year. Mainly due to Ukrainian and Afghan refugees.

The first challenge will be to find a suitable place for those with special needs. Currently there are 22 with autism who can’t be accommodated at the start of the school year.
