More died last year on organ waiting list

Last year more people than ever before died while waiting for an organ transplant. And so far, this year, it’s looking worse.

Numbers from Swisstransplant show in 2022, 83 died in the queue while 570 did receive a new organ.

In the first three months of this year, 29 have already died. If the trend continues, that would be a total of 116 for the year.
Swisstransplant call that number ‘alarming’.

Following a vote, the law is due to change. It will be assumed that everyone will agree to donate their organs in the event of their death – unless they specifically opt out.

But the Federal Health Office says the new law won’t take effect until, 2025 at the earliest.
