Married couple to be tried for slavery

A married couple will soon be going on trial, charged with enslaving domestic staff.

The charges allege the husband and wife trawled the internet for their targets.

In 2018 they found a 22-year-old Filipino woman whose visa had expired. They offered to pay her CHF 800 a month to be available 24 hours a day.

When not required, she was forced to sleep in a cage.

After 10 months, she managed to escape and raised the alarm. When police arrived, they found the couple had already secured another victim – who was in the cage.

The trial in Zurich will start next month.
