Mandatory chips for cats?

The Federal Council has seemingly had a change of opinion and looks set to demand that all cats in the country are chipped.

It was only four years ago the government said compulsory chipping of cats was excessive.

There are around two million cats in Switzerland and the population is growing. Many are feral. They have a miserable life, uncared for and often ill or injured.

A government report on cats is due to be published shortly and it’s likely to recommend chipping.

Biodiversity will also benefit from chipping. Domestic cats are responsible for the death of many birds and lizards.

The Swiss Animal Protection Society says cats are easy and cheap to buy, and if the owner runs into problems many are abandoned.

Chipping a cat costs around 80 francs.
