An ex-semi-professional footballer will face trial in Lyon for murder after claiming he killed a 44-year-old mobster in 2018 before disposing the body in Lake Geneva.

No body has ever been found – but Geneva police say they did find traces of an inflatable canoe and a paddle, which the alleged killer says he used to paddle out to the middle of the lake.

The former footballer once played for Lancy FC and FC Aigle before joining the French second division.

He claims he killed the man due to unpaid drug debts.

The trial is due to start in May.
