Man found dead after 36 years on the run

An escaped prisoner who’d been on the run for 36 years has been found dead after being killed in an accident near a railway line.

Aged 71 when he died, Marco Müller had a colourful life. He played football professionally for Bern Young Boys when he was young.

But then he turned to bank robbery. He was jailed for several attacks on banks and armoured vehicles. He was jailed in Délémont in canton Jura – and escaped. He was recaptured after several more robberies and jailed again and escaped again in 1988.

That was the last anyone had heard of him until the end of February, when DNA analysis identified a body found at an electricity substation near a railway line in Bassecourt in canton Jura – his home town.

Throughout his criminal career it’s thought he got away with CHF 3m. Police say they’re not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
