Malaria death in Vaud

Authorities have confirmed a patient in canton Vaud died due to malaria at the end of last month.

But they caught the disease abroad, not in the country.

Canton Vaud had 81 cases last year and Geneva deals with around a 60 a year – all contracted outside the country.

But deaths are rare - about one every three years in Geneva according to the Federal Health Office.

A spokeswoman for the Swiss Malaria Group says the health system here is well resourced to deal with malaria cases and patients can get the right treatment if diagnosed in time.

But they point out transmission in Switzerland is extremely unlikely as the mosquito which carries the disease can’t survive in the climate.
