Major TV news programme axed

In what’s being seen as another blow to traditional media and local news availability, SRF – the German language arm of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation says it will axe two flagship news programmes and cut 75 journalists.

The midday and 6pm edition of ‘Tagesschau’ will end by next summer.

The media union, SSM, is outraged and says a final decision should only be made after the government has revealed the new licence fee deal.

The whole of the Corporation needs to save CHF 50m.

The French language RTS needs to save CHF 10m next year and will lose 55 people, but it's hoped many of those losses can be covered by natural wastage.
