Geneva residents are being warned a five-year programme of works to spread geothermal energy starts next year.
More than 100 km of pipes will be laid in the city centre by 2030. The pipes will carry warm water from heat recovery systems and will supply 1,700 buildings with 80% of energy from non-fossil fuel systems.
But the city will also make use of the works by upgrading other systems at the same time, such as drinking water systems, telecoms, sound absorbent surfaces and then plant new trees.
The head of the utility company, the SIG, Robert Cramer, says ‘it’s a hell of a plan’.
