Less snow fell on glaciers this season

Snow deficit on glaciers compared to 2010-2020 average

Swiss glaciers saw 13% less winter snow than the 2010–2020 average, according to the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network.

On 21 glaciers measured, snow levels were up to 52% below normal - Silvretta Glacier in Graubunden hit a record low.

A clear north-south weather pattern has emerged. The northeastern glaciers had particularly poor snowfall, while Ticino and southern Valais were closer to average, thanks to mid-April snow.

Although better than the dry winters of 2022 and 2023, experts warn that early snowmelt could still drive significant glacier loss this summer.
