Left luggage and car fire disrupts airport

GVA

Geneva airport had a difficult Saturday afternoon with two security alerts and a car on fire.

Firefighters were called out at around 4pm to tackle a car fire close to the Ferney tunnel under the runway. It took around 15 minutes to get the fire under control. The occupants managed to escape and there were no injuries.

Around three hours later, the police bomb squad were called to investigate a package at arrivals. Passengers were told to leave the area – but they weren’t allowed to leave the airport.

Shortly after another bag was reported. Police say that was likely left by someone in the rush to leave during the first alert.

Flights were not disrupted – but people were stopped from entering or leaving the airport for more than two hours.

It was one of the busiest days with the start of school holiday in many cantons.
