Lack of snow ahead of holiday rush

This coming weekend, the last ski resorts are switching to winter mode and bracing for a holiday rush.

The only thing missing? Snow. In places like Gstaad, Zermatt and Arosa, there’s barely a dusting on roofs and meadows.

Down in the lowlands, it’s green and brown, and likely to stay that way.

MeteoSwiss expert Yves Karrer told the Blick newspaper that the chance of lowland snow over Christmas is just ten percent, with a white Christmas even less likely.

Some of the higher runs in many resorts are being kept open by snow machines – but the very high runs are too rocky, the machines can’t make enough to cover the ground.

Forecasters say a little more snow in the mountains is coming – but a significant fall before Christmas is unlikely.
