Shoppers in french speaking switzerland are increasingly seeing food packaging without any French language details - and it’s perfectly legal.
Swiss law states providing details are in one of the national languages or English - that’s fine.
So, the product name and details could be only in German, French or Italian. The government says that any food imports from Germany, France or Italy don’t need to have any other languages listed.
The law also allows English as the sole language on packages.
The head of food at the Swiss Romande Consumers’ Association, Juliette Ivanez, told the 20 minutes newspaper, any confusion over allergy details could pose a serious health risk and encourages people to complain to the manufacturer and report it to the association.
