A group of MPs are calling for the Gotthard pass to be open all year round to alleviate jams at the tunnels.
The pass is normally closed between November and May – which means it can’t be used by tourists during Easter.
In the last ten years, the waiting time at the Gotthard Tunnel has tripled.
The plans would mean building avalanche barriers, covered road sections and in places new road sections. It would cost around CHF 300m, according to the Federal Roads Office.
Backers point out that is considerably cheaper than a tunnel.
