Jota's death hangs over Portugal match

The death of the Portuguese football player, Diogo Jota, hung heavily over last night’s Euro game in Bern where Portugal faced Spain.

The player died with his brother, André Silva, in a car accident yesterday.

There was a minute’s silence before the start of the match and fans held banners commemorating the player.

The manager of the Portuguese women’s team, Franceso Neto, says he’s devasted at the news. He used to coach Jota when he was in the Under 19 team and he had stayed in touch with him.

When the match did get underway, Spain dominated Portugal, winning 5-0.

In the other game yesterday, in Sion, Italy beat Belgium 1-0.

Today’s games – Denmark meet Sweden in Geneva at 6pm and Germany play Poland in Sankt Gallen at 9pm.

Geneva police are warning there’ll be road closures around the stadium starting from 2pm and advise avoiding the area unless you’re going to the game.
