Initiative to limit population to go to vote

The Swiss People’s Party has submitted 115,000 signatures for its initiative to call on the government to make sure the population of Switzerland does not exceed 10 million before the year 2050.

It’s called the ‘sustainability initiative’.

The party says it only took 9 months to collect the names. It claims that shows there’s tremendous support.

The initiative calls on the government to start to make decisions once the population hits 9.5 million. Such as changing the asylum policy and cutting back on family reunions.

Currently the population is 9 million. The Federal Statistics Office says the 10 million mark is likely to be hit by the year 2040 on current trends.

But that’s probably the high point. The population is likely to fall after that – without any government action.
