A citizens’ initiative to curb air traffic growth and boost public transport is being prepared for next year.
The environmental group actif-trafiC, known for its campaign against highway expansion, wants to introduce a tax on airline tickets based on the polluter-pays principle.
Frequent flyers, long-haul passengers, and business jets would pay more, with revenue redistributed to the public through mobility vouchers and used to improve rail links, especially night trains.
Supporters say the goal isn’t to ban flying but to make cleaner travel more attractive.
