Immigration is playing a key role in keeping Switzerland’s population younger - and its social systems afloat.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, foreign residents are on average seven years younger than Swiss citizens and far more likely to be of working age.
Without immigration, Switzerland would see a sharper rise in retirees, increasing pressure on pensions and healthcare.
That debate is now front and centre, as voters prepare to decide on a proposal from the Swiss People's Party to cap the population at 10 million next year.
