A government minister is warning that voting to heavily restrict immigration could have the reverse effect than expected.
Voters are set to decide on June 14th on a proposal to cap the country’s population at 10 million, driven by concerns over immigration and pressure on housing, transport and public services.
But Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider is pushing back, arguing that foreign workers actually strengthen the system - especially pensions.
She says migrants contribute more to the AVS than they receive, helping keep the scheme in surplus.
