Finding an apartment in Switzerland’s big cities remains a real challenge, but a new report reveals that construction has actually surged in recent years.
According to the Federal Housing Office, Geneva and Lausanne have more than doubled their housing output since the early 2000s. That’s thanks to a mix of demolition and rebuilding, repurposing old industrial sites, and adding extra floors to existing buildings.
Despite this boom, living space per person remains smaller in French-speaking cities—around 31 to 34 square meters - compared to over 40 in Bern and Basel.
Experts say densification is working - but demand is still outpacing supply.
