Hottest year last year

The latest government figures show that Switzerland was the hottest it’s ever been last year since records began in 1864.

The Federal Environment Office says the hottest day last year was in Geneva when temperatures reached 38.3 on August 4.

The longest period of hot days was in Lugano last summer. The Ticino city didn’t see temperatures drop below 30 for two weeks.

The zero-degree mark moved to an altitude of 5,184 metres. That’s also a new record – and higher than the highest point in the country, which is Pointe Dufour at 4,636 meters.
