The Geneva University Hospital is straining under the pressure of social admissions as there are no spaces to look after vulnerable children in the canton.
There are 17 children being looked after by staff at the moment as they’ve been removed from their families for their own safety - but there are no spaces in care homes for them.
The hospital defines a child as anyone under 17 - but most of the admissions are very small children - around 3 years old.
The high number of children being looked after by the hospital is having an impact on its work. Non-urgent operations are being cancelled - but it stresses urgent care is going ahead as normal.
Their hospital bills are being paid for by the Department for Education.
