A study by researchers at Unisanté has found that Switzerland’s summer heatwave in 2022 led to a rise in deaths. The analysis shows excess mortality of about four percent, mainly among people over the age of 80.
Scientists say the impact became noticeable after four consecutive days with average temperatures above 20 degrees, including warm nights.
The researchers argue that current heatwave alert thresholds used by MeteoSwiss may need to be reconsidered, suggesting earlier warnings and quicker contact with vulnerable elderly people during prolonged warm periods.
