MeteoSuisse has issued a level-three heatwave warning for most of French-speaking areas from today, with the new wave now set to run until Sunday.
Temperatures will climb to between 33 and 35 degrees across Geneva, Sion and Payerne, and nights will grow steadily muggier as lows creep towards 20 degrees by the weekend.
Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Valais have banned open fires, joining a long list of cantons where drought risk is now at level four out of five.
Storms from Friday could nick a few degrees off in the late afternoons, but forecasters warn they will not end the episode.
The current alert runs until 13 July — but highs could stay near 36 degrees into the following week.
Several cantons and communes are already looking ahead to Swiss National Day, on August 1st, which is normally celebrated with fireworks.
Fireworks could be banned if the conditions remain dry.
