Health premiums may rise due to inflation

Federal Councillor, Alain Berset, is facing criticism after proposing measures to control hospital costs.

Critics say it could lead to a reduction in the quality of healthcare.

The proposal aims to limit the amount that hospitals can charge for certain treatments.

Berset says if costs are not kept down, it will lead to a massive increase in health insurance premiums.

The heath insurance association, SantéSuisse, says health costs are already up 7.3% this year and warn, due to the pandemic, cash reserves are already too low.

The proposed measures have been met with opposition from several quarters, including the Swiss Medical Association, which has accused Berset of jeopardizing the standard of healthcare.

The proposed measures are set to be discussed in parliament in the coming weeks, with a final decision expected to be made in the near future.
