At a press conference yesterday afternoon, the Federal Health Office gave a cautiously optimistic view of the current state of the pandemic.

Virginie Massery – head of infectious control, at the health office, says it’s possible we have reached the peak infection rate, although she says she’s concerned about the wide discrepancy in cases across the country. Currently western parts and Ticino are being very badly hit.

But she says the infection rate in Switzerland seem to be mirroring that in the UK, where cases are now falling. But she stresses there remains the need for the vaccine passes as it is difficult to predict the future.

The latest figures show Omicron makes up 88% of new cases and 60% of the population are now vaccinated with the vaccination rate stable.

The head of the Conference of Cantonal Doctors Rudolf Hauri, says infected people are being urged to contact those they may have infected themselves as the system is currently overloaded. He says most infections are occurring within families.

He says the health system is coping at the moment – but there are staff shortages.
