Heavy rain floods homes and closes roads in Geneva

Heavy rain and hail caused flooding in Geneva yesterday afternoon.

The worst hit areas were in the south of the canton, Plan-les-Ouates, Bardonnex and Lancy.

Homes were flooded and roads closed – the Drize River broke its banks in many areas.

Emergency services were called out to nearly 400 incidents with 3,600 calls. Despite the calls, no injuries were reported.

Areas of neighbouring France were also hit. Torrents of fast flowing water swept through the streets of Collonge Sous Salève. A viral video shows a man caught in the water, being carried down by the swell.

Parts of the A40 autoroute heading towards Chamonix were closed.
