The federal government wants to keep some of the covid laws on the books for the next couple of years.

The current law – which has been in force for two years – is due to expire at the end of the year. But the government wants to maintain some provisions it can activate in case of a serious rise in infections and hospitalizations.

Parliament agrees on all the main issues, except one. Who pays for the tests?

Bern wants the cantons to pay for tests from January. The Confederation spent over CHF 2bn on tests in 2021. CHF 1.6bn this year so far.

It’s thought likely the cantons will pass the cost of the tests on to the recipients.
