Govt wants to cut food waste

The government is fed up with food waste.

It says if retail companies don’t do more to cut the amount if food they have to dispose of, it could be taxed or they could be forced to give it away.

This is not a new demand from the Federal Council, it has been concerned about the issue for some time – and it feels the sector is not on track to halve waste by 2030. A target it set two years ago.

It’s estimated retailers dispose of 138,000 tonnes of food a year – and only 9% is collected by charities.

We're not much better – we throw away 330 kilos of food every year.
