Govt rejects nationality vote

The government is recommending people reject an initiative which calls for a standard five years residency before being able to claim citizenship.

Currently the rules state applicants must have been in the country between 5 or 10 years - depending on status – and some cantons have additional rules. 

The government says the initiative weakens cantonal rights.

The initiative was submitted last year and says those wishing to be a citizen need to have lived in the country for 5 years and not spent more than a year in jail – as well has having a basic knowledge of one of the national languages.
