Govt decides not to tax tech firms

In its attempt to persuade the Trump Administration to cut the 39% tariff it’s levied against Switzerland, the government has offered not to apply a digital tax on the US based tech giants.

The move has angered some in parliament as many members believe that’s for them to decide.

Broadly, right wing parties agree with the government and believe Switzerland needs to ease tensions with the US – but those on the left point out the tech companies generate USD 600bn for the United States.

Moves to tax them is known to anger Donald Trump – although some European countries already do, a 3% tax in France raises around EUR 700m.

But some of the parties on the left believe Switzerland should not be intimidated.
