Geneva voters to decide car tax

Geneva voters will be deciding a new form of vehicle tax next month – and battle lines are being drawn up.

Voters will have three choices – no change, halving the tax backed by the Swiss People’s Party, or an amount dependent on its CO2 emissions.

A proposed new tax would also take into account the weight of cars – which could mean heavy electric cars will also be taxed more. Backers say this will reflect the amount of CO2 emitted during its construction.

The average car owner pays CHF 347 a year on car tax – which is average for the country. The most expensive is Jura, which is CHF 468 and the cheapest is Appenzell Innerrhoden at CHF 207.

The vote will be on March 3rd.
