More details are now emerging of a meeting in Washington with Donald Trump and Swiss business leaders.
Geneva used its multi-national heft to persuade the US administration that it would be in both countries’ interest to have a trade deal.
The US is currently imposing a 39% tariff on all Swiss exports.
The heads of Geneva based Rolex, Richemont, the shipping giant MSC, the asset management firm Partners Group, commodity company Mercuria and the trading company MKS PAMP, all met Trump in the Oval Office.
In a joint statement, they said they ‘aimed to underline the strength of economic relations between the US and Switzerland’.
They added the meeting was conducted in a constructive spirit.
A detailed report of the meeting has been sent to the Federal Council.
Trump posed on his Truth Social account that the meeting was a ‘job well done’ and suggested further talks will be held.
