Geneva to spend CHF 6m on drug treatment

Canton Geneva has announced a major programme to counter the use of the drug crack and will spend CHF 6m on improving facilities for users.

It will enhance the four-pronged strategy of prevention, therapy, risk reduction and repression.

The number of beds available at the Quai 9 treatment centre will be doubled to 24. The cantonal government says improving the space where addicts can rest will cut violence.

There will also be more social workers available.

The Quai 9 centre has been in place behind the train station for over 20 years. It was ground breaking in French speaking Switzerland at the time when it was set up with the backdrop of a country fighting open drug scenes and Aids.
