The announcement by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, that the next G7 summit will be held in Evian is worrying many who remember the last time the meeting was held on the lakeside town in 2003.
22 years ago, the summit triggered major protests in Geneva which led to riots and looting.
French authorities threw a ring of steel around Evian – which led to several anti-globalist groups choosing to target Geneva, which was seen as the next best thing due to the city’s international profile.
Roger Golay was a senior police officer at the time and has since been elected to parliament. He’s demanding the Federal Council seek assurances from France that it will shoulder security and damage costs. He says he’s concerned violent anti-Trump protestors will cause similar problems.
Last time, policing costs hit CHF 40m and reinforcements from the German police were brought to Geneva.
The government says it did receive a heads-up from France about the announcement beforehand.
It says protective plans are already underway, and the cantons of Vaud and Geneva will be involved.
