Geneva sets out plan for the elderly

The city of Geneva has unveiled a 30-point plan to improve living standards for the elderly.

It highlights financial precariousness and loneliness as the main concerns.

It’s expected the average life span will grow to reach 89 for women and 87 for men by 2050 - a rise of 2 and 4 years.

One of the main aims is to make sure the elderly receive the state benefits they’re entitled to.

Many may be missing out as they’re either too proud to ask for help – or may not speak French that well.

Social isolation is a major concern. Programmes that support group activities, such as sports, will be encouraged as will meetings where the elderly can discuss needs and concerns.

The improving life expectancy will mean two older generations will be living side by side. The gap between 60 and 100 is the same as zero to 40 years old – as will be pointed out by a new poster going up around the city.
