Geneva rugby player banned for life

The Swiss Rugby Federation has banned a player for life who attacked a referee after a game in Geneva.

During a match at the Cherpines stadium on September 23rd, the home team Plan-les-Ouates was playing Avussy. The referee asked two players to stop making vulgar remarks.

One of them starts arguing with the referee, who gives him a yellow card – which the player ignores, so then a red card followed.

After the game, the player who’d been sent off walked up to the referee. Reports suggest he kicked him in the genitals and then landed a powerful punch to the face.

The Rugby Federation has now banned the player for life. The director, Stéphane Desprez, says such actions are very rare.

Police are also investigating the incident.
