Geneva - rich pickings for tax

Canton Geneva has proved to be a gold mine for federal tax authorities chasing up late tax payments from last year.

Authorities have banked a total of CHF 520m from only a handful of tax payers in the canton – the next highest canton was Vaud at CHF 23m.

In fact, throughout the country, Bern collected a total of CHF 547m – so only CHF 27m from all other cantons.

The outstanding money is chased down by a legally powerful, and yet somewhat secret, Criminal Affairs and Investigations Division.

Geneva has a large concentration of wealthy tax payers who have attracted attention. But experts say not all the outstanding tax and fines will actually get collected as some may not be able to pay the amount due or will strike a deal.
