Geneva pedestrian bridge costs balloon

The planned new Mont Blanc pedestrian bridge could cost as much as three times an original budget.

An initial estimate 11 years ago put the price between CHF 20 and 40m. Now it could be as much as CHF 60m.

A final figure has not yet been put forward – but there are still hopes it may open at the end of 2026.

The reasons for the cost overrun are due to a miscalculation on how much space the ships need to manoeuvre leading to a change in design which will need more supports – but no one could have foreseen the impact on the Ukraine war, which is driving up material prices.

There are now worries the project may not happen.

The city has already committed CHF 200m to the extension of the Museum of Art and History and CHF 120m for the Geneva Library.
