Geneva electronic signs testing today

A series of large electronic signs around Geneva will be tested today, before the official launch in September.

When fully functional, the signs will show drivers real time traffic conditions and offer alternative routes.

Around 40 have been set up across the canton.

The project has been set up in conjunction with the navigation company TomTom and has been in planning since 2018.

While the signs are now in place, there are still more cameras needing to be installed so the Traffic Control Centre can see what’s going on in real time.

Officials have given assurances the camera will not be used for surveillance as the definition is not clear enough to make out people – they’re designed only to watch traffic levels.
