The Geneva Grand Council’s Education Committee has doubled down on its decision to end school education for those families who live outside the canton.
It’s mainly affecting families who live in neighbouring France – in many cases within 5 kilometres of the border.
The cantonal government has decided that, as from next year, no children living outside the canton will be accepted into schools with a gradual implementation over the next three years.
The Socialist Party put forward a motion that all students in the school system should be able to finish their studies – that means the phase out could last for as long as the next 15 years.
But that’s been rejected by the Education Committee.
