A study from Canton Geneva shows the number of domestic violence cases are the highest they’ve been since 2010.
The vast majority are between spouses, but 14% are cases of violence against a child. Cantonal police have had to intervene more than twice a day on average.
Most perpetrators are male with an average age of 40.
The figures from the Cantonal Office for the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Violence also show that domestic violence against children is less correlated with gender – although slightly more girls are affected. That becomes more marked when the child is aged 13 or over.
Eighteen femicides (a hate crime against a woman on the basis of their gender and/or sex) have been reported across the whole country this year.
The survey also highlights that those accused of domestic violence were very often victims of violence when they were a child.
