Members of the City of Geneva Council have voted themselves a pay increase of 25%.
Councillors are paid an attendance fee of CHF 143 – that will rise to CHF 178.
Most parties backed the move, except the Centre-Green Liberal group. It was justified, say the backers, as the fee hasn’t changed since 2011 and since 2013 the fees are now taxable - before, they were tax free.
Also, others pointed out some younger members have left as they can’t balance their commitments with the council and work.
