A Geneva Grand Council member has submitted a bill that would prioritise those who live in the canton when searching for work.
Swiss People’s Party member, Stéphane Florey, says he was prompted to act after the latest figures showed the largest annual increase in the number of border workers at nearly 8%.
If the bill passes, anyone hiring for the state or any entity that receives state funds will have to offer a job to a Geneva resident first.
The Geneva Citizens Movement – which has long campaigned against frontalier workers – welcomed the bill and says the Swiss People’s Party is finally waking up.
Others counter such a bill may violate the rules on free movement with the EU.
