Geneva bar owners call for longer terrace opening

Bar owners in Geneva are demanding they should be able to have their terraces open until 2am every day – saying the forced closures at midnight is costing them money – and so jobs.

The law changed in the City of Geneva in 2022 which means terraces have to close at midnight from Sunday to Thursday.

The bars also point out that Thursdays is a very busy night – often busier than Saturdays.

The Geneva Bar Federation has submitted 700 signatures demanding the law be changed, but they say they could easily provide 7,000.

But a spokesman for the city says bars can continue to operate within the premises and noise complaints have dropped since the new rules came in.
