Geneva bans swimming in Allondon

The Allondon meeting the Rhone River (c) Albins

Canton Geneva has stopped swimming in the Allondon River running through its territory as the water flow has reached a critically low level due to drought.

Most of the river is in France. It starts in the Pays de Gex and ends when it joins the Rhone.

The canton says it’s to protect wildlife and the local flora. From now, any swimming or fishing – and even gold panning – is banned.

The restrictions will stay in place for least two weeks but could be extended if the situation doesn’t improve.
