Geneva banned outdoor events ahead of storm

Canton Geneva banned all outdoor events on Saturday afternoon due to the arrival of thunderstorms.

It included the Fan Zone for the Euro championships – so thousands had to stay at home to watch Switzerland beat Italy 2-0.

Also affected were school and village events and the flea market on the Plainpalais had to pack up early.

Around thirty flights had to be cancelled at the airport and some others had to be redirected.

But overall, the storm over Geneva ended up being less damaging than feared. The police say they were not called out for weather related problems, but firefighters had to intervene around 20 times.
