Geneva accident hotspot - but not the worst

Geneva is a bit of an accident hotpot in the French speaking regions of the country - but that may be due to the high level of cross border traffic and the rise of electric scooters.

The insurance company HelloSafe examined the figures from the Federal Roads Office and found that on a per capita basis. Geneva has 2.5 accidents per thousand - the same as Neuchâtel, but higher than others in Western Switzerland.

The police point out Geneva has a heavy flow of traffic running from Germany to France through the canton – which could be contributing.

They also say accidents involving electric scooters are up.

But the high accident rates in some more rural German speaking cantons is raising eyebrows. Lucerne there are 2.5 – but Uri, the small mountainous canton, has 3.5. Although that does have the autoroute to the Gotthard Tunnel running through it.
